Sad to hear this wonderful lady who loved music and whom I had great luck to sing with occaisionally has passed. I was saddened to learn of the passing away of Josephine !! Although I haven't seen her often over the years, I always enjoyed hearing about her many involvements in music which was also my passion. One of the things she mentioned to me the last time we chatted was how much she enjoyed working with me when I was the Swimming instructor at the Saw Pit wharf and she became my assistant !!! She thanked me for being her mentor !!! Josephine will certainly be missed in Lunenburg and Mahone Bay !!!! My condolences to her family !!!

Angela - I was sorry to hear about your mom's passing. "Mrs. Skinner" had quite an impact on me - countless piano and theory lessons, playing handbells at St. John's, a million music festival entries, summers at the Lunenburg Pool, and weekly drives to Acadia in high school. Josephine was retired from Music for Young Children by the time I became Maritime Coordinator for the program but I continue to hear wonderful stories about her. I am told that she was a great inspiration and friend to her fellow MYC teachers. As one of our original teachers, she helped set a solid foundation for, and enthusiastically nurtured, future teachers in NS. She will be greatly missed!

We will always remember the good times we had with Josephine at MYC conferences and meetings at our home and other teachers homes over the 28 years that I taught MYC. She had so many great ideas and I loved visiting her when she was teaching. We won't be able to attend the funeral since I am having health problems but we will keep her and her family in our hearts and memories.

Mrs. Skinner was the lady that taught me how to play a guitar, took me to swimming lessons, taught me in Girl Guides and took me to her camp on Heckman's Island many, many times. To Mrs. Skinner family & friends Josephine, was born under the shield of God. For what she's accomplished during her life an the people she's touched. I was fortunate to have her teach me swimming in Blue Rocks. For sure she was not going to fail us. Be there or be square. You were going to learn to swim, whether you liked it or not. If you fell off a ship in the middle of the ocean, you would survive. We attended when it was high tide. Bad weather or good. We were going in. I'll never forget her, or the lessons she taught. Lunenburg lost a mascot that won't be replaced in her caliber. She was a something. And she will be missed by many.

Jo was a cousin who was always part of my life; she played piano during operettas, then accompanied many of us when we sang duets and trios. She will always be Mrs. Skinner to me. That is the name I was to call her when I was in her nursery school. I was one of her students from the Co op nursery school. I enjoyed it so much that I went morning and afternoon in 2 classes as a puppy dog & kitty cat. She was the one who taught me how to tie a bow and other life skills.

I remember all the outings we went on.Visits to the Fire Dept., dentest, the farm and more. She made sure we did a lot. They were very fun times.

I also had her for a panio teacher and she taught me swimming lessons. But more then that she was a good family friend. She was like a mother to me in a way.

When Angela was little Jo chose my parents as God parents for angela. I remember lots of times shared with the family. Even with Mrs. O'Conner and my nanny. So I guess we go way back.

There were the Christmas gatherings when they would come to our place to watch the Rose Bowl Parade as we had a color set. I remember her favorite "The Sound of Music" The good Chridtmas cookies & fudge.

When I got married I had her play the organ and she gave the toast to the bride.

I haven't been back to Lunenburg for quite a few years, but on the most recent time there I went past her house and she was out. Doing what she loved. I got to say hi to her.

Every time you would see her it was like going down memory lane. She always liked to say to me," Now Susan!". I can her her saying it and with her laugh.

She was a great lady, teacher and most important my friend. I have to say I will really miss her. My life was more inriched from Mrs. Skinner (Jo) being in it.

I feel bad that she had cancer and had to go through all that. Glad God has relieved you of all your pain. I know oneday we will see each other again. Until then I know she would say you have to go on.

I just wished she realy knew how much she touched my life and what she really ment to me. Love you, Mrs. Skinner, Josephine, Jo, Mom.

She taught me swimming in Bayport, then taught MYC and nursery school to our children, then came back into our lives when she joined the Riverport and Area Community Choir. We so enjoyed picking her up for choir and she would tell us how Albert would shoo her out the door. Jo was the most dedicated educator we've ever met. She taught her students discipline, respect and, most of all, a love of all things musical. To All of the family of Jo, our deepest condolences. There are very few people who are a force of nature, but Jo was one of them. First time I ever met her was at Fishermen's and she was getting therapy for her knee replacement. She had the whole room listening to stories about swimming five miles from some place in the back harbour; somehow you knew every word of it was true. Then we got to meet her at Kinderchoir. It was every Sunday; it was free; and Jo was always on the look-out for new kids. And they always found their way there. There was swimming and pizza night (on her dime) and concerts and performances (all arranged by her). And this was only a slice of very full life. Jo was a straight shooting delight to meet on the street. She was always full of life and curious about everybody. We are gonna miss her, but then again with people like Jo there is something about her kindness and generosity that stays with you forever. See ya Jo John, Eva and Sonya

It is with great sadness we acknowledge the passing of a friend and teacher. Maddi started her musical training with Jo in Music for Young Children at four years of age. She sang in the Kinderchor and took private lessons until she graduated from high school. Jo has been a friend for many years and we participated in different musical adventures throughout the years. I find it very difficult to think of Lunenburg without Jo. Lunenburg is certainly minus a great leader and teacher.
