I had only met Basil a few times and he was always so nice but my late husband Wendell had met him many times over the years (generally with Joey - a few stories there)and thought the world of him.I had planned to go to the funeral but woke up very sick yesterday and was unable to go anywhere but please know that I was thinking of all of you and Loretta it was such a pleasant surprise when I discovered you at Shoreham Village this summer - it was so nice to see you. When I was a teenager I went to visit my relatives in N.S. and stayed with Aunt Loretta & Uncle Basil. The whole family went out of their way to make me feel welcome and I will always look back with great fondness on my time with them. One evening Karen and I were getting ready to go out when Uncle Basil gestured for me to come into the living room. I did and he proceeded to try to give me money, which I refused. He patiently explained (this is not verbatim but as close as I remember it) "Look, if you go out and perhaps meet a young fella and he ends up making you mad you'll need money to get home," I responded that I had money but nope, he would not be satisfied until I accepted the money he offered..."just in case I might have need of it". This is just a small example of how thoughtful and caring this good man was. I did not need to use his "mad money" and returned it the next day, but it is a memory I hold in my heart that makes me chuckle and also makes me weep. Aw Uncle Basil, how will we all go on without you? Thank you for teaching me to always be prepared and also for the deeper lesson, the one that touched my heart. "You matter" was that unspoken but profoundly acted out message that I will forever treasure.. I had always loved my aunts and uncles and had always had a special spot for my Uncle Basil - my time with the family in N.S. cemented those feelings and even though it has been ages since then I will always love all of the Grandys. Uncle Basil, may you sail with the angels and well enjoy your well earned rest and forever fishing trip. I love you, Your niece, Carol

We are so deeply sorry to learn of Uncle Basil's passing. He was such a kind, generous and compassionate man. He left us all an example of what it means to be 'good'. I will treasure his memory and think of him every time I gaze across waters of any kind, be it a lake, pond, or ocean. I wish we could have come to see you all. Aunt Loretta I hope you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers as are all our cousins. I hope you are all comforted in some small measure by knowing how highly regarded and loved Uncle Basil was during his lifetime and how he will be sadly missed. I remember as a young teenager helping dad shovel the driveway when we lived in lunenburg. It was a big nor'easter and over three feet of snow at the end of the driveway. I seen us getting closer and thinking good, we're almost done. When I turned to go back to the house dad walked up to the neighbours driveway and said, we're not done yet. That was his way. Guess that's the mindset you get when you grow up in a small outport where everyone depends on each other. Learned lots of good life lessons from this gentle giant. Boots to big to fill.
